Palm Leaf Narrative Engraving

A palm-leaf engraving from Raghurajpur begins as a leaf, but carries the legacy of an early knowledge medium. Tender palm leaves are harvested, seasoned, dried and treated - often with turmeric - before being cut and bound into panels. Using a fine iron stylus, the artist etches every line directly into the brittle surface; there is no erasing a mistake. Lampblack is then rubbed into the grooves and wiped away, leaving the engraving sharply visible.
